I am looking for someone knowlegeable in using a three step with the MSD 12 Lt PRO Mag. Also plan to use a shift light. I plan on ordering the parts very soon but am concerned about mag compatable parts.
Thanks. George

George: i can't speak to the 3 step deal, but thought i'd share our MSD experiences with you. we felt a need to step up to a 44 from our Mallory stuff and picked one up from a big show team. we really didn't see much difference in performance but ran it since we had it. one year, our heap would start, couldn't figure it out, put the Mallory back in and it fired right up. sent the 44 back to MSD, they returned it with the customary "nothing wrong" so we put it back in, wondering all the time about all the new stuff in a mag that had nothing wrong. at Havana, we hit the burst panel, ususally a sign that we'd fired with an intake open. pulled it down and didn't find anything wrong with the motor, put the Malloy back in and ran the hot rod the rest of the season. bottom line.....i sent the Mallory to Cirello, had it hopped up to a V, and sold the 44. just a heads up that if anything goes wrong with your ignition, when you get it back there'll be "nothing wrong" and you'll have a heap of new parts. go figure, eh?! just some thoughts from a dude here in the corn fields.

Thanks for the heads up Ron. The MSD mag came with the car. It is new and IF there is rpm limitors that are genuinely compatable with the 12Lt we would like to use them.
OH, I am looking at a corn field just the other side of the street. I'm on West Main Street,Rochester, Illinois. George

Dave, The driver gets home from the salt flats Saturday night. So, the plan is to be at Havana Sunday. MSD should be at Indy labor day weekend, I'll try and get it figured out there.

Just so you know, a lot of tracks don't allow 3 steps, 2 steps are okay but not 3. Apparently they consider it a down-track aid.

I was advised by the engine builder to use the 3-step,controlling the burnout rpm the leave rpm and a top limit protecting the engine. I am not looking to bracket race our fed, just looking to shorted the learning curve for the driver and the crew as we have been away from the sport for a long time. My last local racing was done at Motion Raceway in Assumption on a turbocharged 2-wheeler. I recall the Jones brothers closed that track in 1983.
Thanks for the input. I appreciate all of it. We are looking forward to a few races this year and 6-10 next year.

We use an 8168 timing control w/our MSD 20 amp mag.
It has the hardware built in to convert the signal, so your (electronic) tach still works, shift light works, etc.
No reason why a 2 step or 3 step couldn't be wired into that. Thanks, KG
